One
of the purposes of the NSLMC is to advance the study and enjoyment
of Geology in our community. For the past 40 years, the NSLMC
has awarded a cash scholarship to a declared Earth Sciences major
with Junior or Senior class standing and an overall GPA of at
least 3.3 at the University of Washington.
The
applicants are reviewed on academic merit, demonstrated participation
in extracurricular activities such as University, public and/or
community service, potential for a successful career in the field
of Geology and need for financial assistance. The chosen student
receives $2,500.00 after a required presentation to the NSLMC,
becomes an honorary member of the NSLMC, receives a free monthly
copy of the NSLMC newsletter “Rocky Trails” and is welcome to
attend all NSLMC field trips, workshops and meetings.
A
student can apply by completing an Earth and Space Sciences Undergraduate
Scholarship Application available in the ESS Student Services
Office (JHN 065 or JHN 067) and attach the following items:
-
Resume
(one page),
-
Essay
in support of the application (two pages) and
-
Letters of recommendation from two ESS faculty members.
All
application materials must be returned to the Student Services
mailbox in JHN 062 by the annual April deadline. The name of the
recipient is announced at the ESS Annual Honors and Awards Program
in May and is presented a NSLMC Scholarship Award Certificate
at that time.
Awarding
an annual scholarship is an ambitious project, one enthusiastically
supported by all of the members. The fund is generated by club
activities throughout the year that are earmarked for the fund.
Generous in-kind and monetary donations are gratefully received
by the club and, ultimately, by the UW recipient.
The
students have been enormously appreciative, using the cash for
tuition or required honors research. When the student gives a
presentation to our club, it is enjoyed by all but especially
by our approximately 25 Juniors – age 4 to 14 – who might be inspired
to continue the study of Geology in college.

Our
2011 recipient Annie Bauer, doing her field work!
The
current members of the NSLMC Scholarship Committee are Harvey
Knizek, Lorna Guthrie and Marcia Skinner.
