JUNIOR ACTIVITIES

Junior members are a very important part of our club and its activities. Some of our present adult members began as junior members. Prior to every club meeting, we have a one hour session devoted to juniors. Usually, half of that time is some educational activity and the other half is usually a craft project of some kind involving rocks and minerals. Junior members also participate in other club functions such as the workshops and field trips. Is there anything more satisfying than seeing a 7 year old displaying a pendant that contains a cabochon that they made from a rock that they found?

The Mine Adventure

In August, two families from our church went with us to the Damon and Pythis Mine. There were ten children and six adults in all.

We met at the Money Creek Campground and everyone was excited. The road really surprised us because there were really deep ruts in it from water washouts. Two years ago, my family and I had gone to this mine with the Mineral Council and we always wanted to go back.

At the mine, all the girls were scared to go in because it was dark. But everyone had the same yellow flashlights. Dad and I provided gloves and goggles for the families. When we got to the digging spot, everyone got a hammer and started to dig. Dad showed them the stibnite and pyrite vein and everyone got some. After two hours, everyone was tired and muddy--but had fun.
